The School Day

Typical Day for a Middle / High School Student

Students arrive at school around 7:30am and proceed into the gym for breakfast.

At 8:05am, the Middle/High school students are welcomed by a morning message given by the Principal or Dean of the school.

At 8:30am all classes begin. Throughout the day, students have 4 classes that each last 90 minutes. Students simultaneously take several courses each semester including:

  • Literature I/Literature II
  • Algebra/Geometry
  • Physical Science/Biology
  • Modern World History/Modern American History
  • Writing I/Writing II
  • College Prep
  • Electives

By midday, the students go to lunch. As in the morning, the Principal or Dean addresses the group for their afternoon message.

Dismissal is at 3:00pm.

At 4:00pm, several students may attend an after-school activity which may include tutoring, athletics, choir and/or a special club led by a teacher.

Typical Day for a KG Student

KG students arrive at school around 7:30am, and proceed into the cafeteria for breakfast.

At 8:00am, the group is welcomed by a morning message given by the Principal or Dean of the school.

During first block (120 minutes), Kindergarten through Fifth grade students will have reading in their self-contained classrooms.

Throughout the day, students will have instruction in all core content areas (Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science). On specific days, handwriting will be taught. Once to twice a day, either in the morning or afternoon, students have the opportunity of engaging in two instructional activities they really enjoy: 1) going to the computer lab and/or 2) Physical Education, Spanish, Art, and/or Music.

By midday, the students go to lunch. As in the morning, the Principal addresses the group for their afternoon message.

Dismissal is at 1:00pm.

At two very strategic points in the morning and afternoon, time is briefly dedicated to celebrating behaviors (good, not-so-good, and/or indifferent) of the students.

Typical day for an elementary student

Students arrive at school around 7:30am and classrooms open at 7:50am. The school provides supervision for students starting at 7:30am.

From 8:00am-10:00am students typically have Literacy (reading/writing) instruction.

At 9:45am students eat their snacks in class, and at 10:00am have a break of 15 minutes.

The next block of classes is from 10:15am-12:30pm.  During this time, students might have specialist classes that include Modern Languages or EAL, Art, Music, PE & Swimming.

At 12:30pm, all students have lunch in our cafeterias. They eat from 12:30pm-12:55pm and have play time recess from 12:55pm-1:15pm.

At 1:15pm students go back to their homeroom classes. Typically, this is the time when teachers read aloud to their students.

From 1:30pm-3:00pm students either stay in their homeroom classes, typically learning about their Units of Inquiry, or they go to specialist classes.

All classes are dismissed at 3:00pm.

Some students may attend after school activities from 3:15pm-4:00pm.
